Sidney Archibald Neaves

Son of James Mark Neaves and Maria Neaves née Taylor of Hyde Cottage, Latimer Road, Teddington

Born 18th May 1889 at Teddington

Insurance clerk of 86 Coburg Road, Teddington in 1911

He enlisted as Private (5337) with the Honourable Artillery Company in 1915 and served for 3 years 244 days (18 November 1915-19 July 1919) during which time he was wounded and rose through the ranks to become Acting Company Sergeant Major.

Following his discharge from the British Army in 1919 he lived at 24 Park Lane, Teddington but by 1920 he was a patient at Clare Hall Sanatorium, South Mimms. The Sanitorium was founded in 1746 as the Middlesex County Hospital for Smallpox in Windmill Street, near Tottenham Court Road, London but in 1896 the hospital building was sold and the smallpox patients were transferred to Clare Hall. By 1911, with the decline of smallpox, Clare Hall had become primarily a hospital for patients with tuberculosis and it is therefore almost certain that Sidney Neaves was being treated there for TB, or was suffering from TB or an associated illness, as a result of his military service during WW1. He died there on 10th July 1920, aged 31. Probate granted on 3rd August 1920 at London

Buried in Teddington Cemetery on 16th July 1920 (Plot M Grave 377)
