William Herbert Downey

Son of John George Downey and Ann Charlotte Downey née Howard

of 23 School House Lane, South Teddington

Born 31st July 1901 at Kingston-upon-Thames, Surrey

Joined the Royal Navy on 12th August 1918 and served for 12 years.

Re-entered the Royal Navy as Stoker 1st Class on H.M.S. Hebe (Minesweeper)

and died 22nd November 1943 when his ship hit a mine off the coast of Italy

and sank with the loss of thirty-nine lives.

No known grave but the sea.

Listed on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial (Panel 78, Column 1)
