John (Jack) Files Finnis
Son of Henry Joseph Finnis and Agnes Violet Finnis née Davis
Born 8th March 1891 at Teddington
Educated at St Mark's School, South Teddington
Lived at Manor Cottages, Lodge Road, Teddington and 48 Church Road, Teddington
Assistant road foreman with Messrs.Laurence & Thacker of Streatham
Joined the Royal Navy in 1911 and served throughout World War 1 as Stoker (K.16255) (1st Class)
on HMS Renown and the Destroyer HMS Moresby during the Battle of Jutland.
He then transferred to the Royal Navy submarine service and served on the submarines E43 and L55.
He died with the sinking of the L55 during the war of intervention in Russia on 4th June 1919.
The wreck was found by Soviet minesweepers in 1927 and raised to the surface on 11th August 1928.
The remains of 34 crew members, including Jack Finnis, were returned to England on a British ship
and buried in a communal grave at Hasler Royal Naval Cemetery, Hampshire on 7th September 1928.
The names of the crew members are commemorated on the Screen Wall “L 55”,
