Alexander Smith Newman

Son of Alfred Henry Newman (1860–1936) and Henrietta Newman née Ashby (1864–1936)

Born about August 1888 at Highgate, Middlesex

Married May Jessie Hamilton at Alderney, Channel Islands in 1909

Their children, William Ashby Newman and Mervyn Frances Newman, were baptised at St Mary’s Church, Teddington on 2nd Feb 1914

The family lived at 40 Gomer Gardens, Teddington

Employed as a tram conductor at Fulwell Tram Depot in 1914

Enlisted at Stratford, Essex, as Private (L/10681) with Middlesex Regiment, 3rd Battn and saw action almost immediately at Boulogne,

Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France with 4th Battn, Middlesex Regiment and was awarded the 1914 Star (Mons) with clasp for service under fire.

Admitted to Queen Alexandra Military Hospital, Millbank, London with a gunshot wound to his left hand on 28th December 1914

and was discharged from hospital on 8th February 1915.

Killed in action in France or Flanders on 5th October 1915

Listed on the Loos Memorial, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France (Panel 99 to 101)
