The framed cel from 'The Snowman'

An auction with a difference will take place next Monday at Normansfield Theatre in Teddington – not only will it be recorded by the BBC as part of their Bargain Hunt television series, but it will also feature a unique piece of television history, available to the highest bidder.

It’s an original cel (a piece of artwork on celluloid) that was used in The Snowman, the hugely successful animated television film from 1982. Based on Raymond Briggs’s book of the same name, the film was created using traditional animation techniques comprising pastels, crayons and other colouring tools drawn on pieces of celluloid, which were traced over hand-drawn frames. It’s painstaking work, and it paid off – not only has the film been in constant demand ever since its launch, but it also won a BAFTA award for Best Children’s Programme.

One of those remarkable cels, rarely available, has now found its way to Hansons Auction House, and proceedings at the Normansfield Theatre get under way on Monday at 10am.

In addition to The Snowman cel, more than 700 other items will also be auctioned. They include a pair of Scottish George III silver sauce ladles, a three-piece silver cruet set by Mappin & Webb in fitted case, a cased set of Edward VII silver dessert knives and forks, and… a 20th century upholstered bus seat with orange and red chevron patterns, complete with a chrome hand rail!
