• The future of the Teddington Village Fair

The weather was glorious, the free entertainment highly rated, the crowds came and the children played. It was, of course, the annual Teddington Village Fair held in June and co-organised by the Teddington Society, the Landmark Arts Centre and the parish church of St Mary with St Alban.

However, sponsorship for this year’s event proved hard to raise and was 50% down on 2018’s Fair – so we were lucky to make a small profit this time (all proceeds from our Village Fairs go to local charities). That was due to the continued support of our loyal sponsors The Lensbury and Palmers Solicitors, with free advertising provided by TW11 Magazine and free printing by Beechgrove Press. We were also very grateful for generous donations from Shambles Bar & Restaurant and Vincenzo’s Ice Cream, both of whom had a busy and successful afternoon at the Fair.

Although the Fair is entry free – and we wouldn’t want it any other way – we do have to pay for many things, especially the entertainment. This year the revived Pram Race yielded only a small cash return, and in the end the Village Fair profit was barely in the black.

We had already promised donations to two local charities, so using money from our own funds the Society have donated £600 each to Riding for the Disabled at Park Lane Stables and React, a borough-based charity that helps children (and their families) with potentially terminal illness.

“It’s almost unthinkable to imagine Teddington without its annual Village Fair” said Teddington Society chairman Sheena Harold, “but if future fairs don’t produce a profit, then we have to face the possibility that they become unsustainable.”

The key, of course, is sponsorship. “It would be immensely sad if there were no Village Fair” Sheena added, “so if any companies, organisations or individuals would like to become involved in Teddington’s biggest fundraising event of the year, we’d be grateful and happy to hear from them and discuss options.”
