News from the Roads and Transport Group

20 MPH Zones

The Residents’ Study recommended 20mph “Home Zones” either side of the station. This recommendation was initially rejected, but the campaign continues, along with campaigns for 20mph zones for Broad Street, High Street and Park Lane. We will formally seek these safety measures to be put in place shortly. None of these locations require traffic calming as maximum speeds are generally around 20 mph or less.

More free turnover parking

We proposed a schedule of proposed free turnover spaces after a “Walkabout” with Council Officers in November 2011 (see here). Many of these have been put in place, and others are being reviewed again. Church Road is under discussion at the moment.

Better cycling facilities

The Society is an active member of the borough’s Cycle Liaison Group and is seeking further safety improvements under the “Mini-Holland” bid to Transport for London under Mayor Boris Johnson’s cycle improvements initiative. The two improvements at the top of Teddington’s list are:
(a) the upgrading of the Teddington Station southern footbridge to make it (and the station) fully accessible to cyclists and wheelchair users (a long-standing campaign); and
(b) the extension of the off-road cycle lanes on both sides of the railway bridge to allow cyclists to avoid both roundabouts (see picture).

Crossrail 2

The Society is investigating whether Twickenham Station could be linked to Heathrow via a tunnel to help remove the massive amount of traffic going to and from Heathrow from south and southwest London via Teddington and Twickenham. Windsor Lines Passengers’ Association is also involved.
